NewsWe will miss a great opportunity, if all we do is smile as it passes us by

We are witnessing a paradigm shift. It has been proven that sustainability can go hand in hand with efficiency. Nowadays, nobody thinks that only farms that use environmentally damaging technologies can be profitable. Organic farming offers environmentally sound alternatives for every branch of agriculture – said Dr. Dóra Drexler. The director of the Hungarian Research Institute of Organic Agriculture (ÖMKi) is convinced that there is a huge development potential in organic farming, which could provide a profitable farming perspective for all.

Our research made understandable: We have harvested the potatoes of our work

We achieved one of the major milestones of our SolACE project in the last two weeks as we managed to harvest our small plot potato experiments. We collected almost three tonnes of potatoes from the fields in sacks, which means we can now record the data and analyze it. As we have already reported, we tested various potato genotypes, microbial inoculums and crop rotation enriched with soybeans in the Organic Farming Section of the Soroksár Experimental and Educational Farm of the Szent István University. Our aim was to enhance the combined stress resistance of the plants. In the coming weeks, we will see how the methods we used increased the quantity and the quality of the yield under conditions with sub-optimal water and nutrient inputs.

Why is it so important to preserve diversity?

Recently, a questionnaire survey has been conducted within the project called Farmer’s Pride – focusing on the conservation of landraces – on how Hungarian people appreciate the preservation of agricultural diversity. During the survey wheat and cereal landraces were used as examples, and more age groups have been involved in the research including both people living in the countryside and city dwellers.
