Funding: Horizon Europe, European Union

Coordinator: University of Copenhagen, Denmark

Duration: January 2023 – January 2027

Consortium partners: The CLEVERFOOD project involves 23 partners from 9 different countries (Belgium, Denmark, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Spain).

Transforming the European food system to increase climate awareness, protect biodiversity and improve public health

The CLEVERFOOD project helps to mobilise European citizens, including children, young people, farmers, entrepreneurs, investors, researchers, academics, knowledge centres and policymakers at the societal level to transform the European food system in line with the EU Food Policy Framework 2030, the Farm to Fork Strategy and the Fit for 55 package.

CLEVERFOOD is paving the way towards a regenerative, resilient and plant-based food system by providing targeted support to emerging projects, partnerships and networks by linking policy and living labs.

Through the project, policy labs will develop models and strategies for multi-level governance of the food system, advancing food policies and legislation by launching a peer learning programme, organising multi-stakeholder consultations and bringing together decision-makers at different levels of governance. Living labs will be involved in developing strategies to accelerate social and technological innovations aimed at removing barriers to development, building sustainable food value chains, mobilising key investors, disseminating new technologies in practice and monitoring the transformation of the food system.

The project will use policy labs and living labs as hubs to increase food system science competences of children and youth, promote public engagement, raise awareness of citizens’ individual responsibilities and opportunities, and mobilise at the societal level. This would be achieved by harnessing the potential of influencers, by creating an interactive exhibition on food systems and by designating and supporting permanent competence centres across Europe, thus ensuring the necessary social commitment to transform the food system.

CLEVERFOOD goals

The overall objective of the CLEVERFOOD project is to mobilise all European food system stakeholders at local, regional, national and international level in order to develop transformative governance models that shift the food system towards more sustainable, resilient and regenerative food production and consumption.

Specific objectives of the project are as follows:

  • To coordinate and support cross-project collaboration and knowledge sharing between ongoing, new and upcoming food system related European projects, living labs, partnerships and other initiatives.
  • To support integrated food policy development at all levels.
  • To link innovative food system development approaches with appropriate knowledge and innovation systems.
  • To provide effective investment and community financing opportunities to support the development of sustainable food businesses.
  • To make the transition to plant-based food production attractive and economically viable for farmers and food businesses.
  • To educate and mobilise citizens to change their diets and transform the national, European and global food system.

The role of ÖMKi

As part of the project, ÖMKi supports the development of multi-level governance models for transforming the food system. Our main task is to organise dialogues together the Institute of Agricultural Economics (AKI) (another Hungarian partner in the project) with the aim to promote discussion around national food strategy and policy involving local, regional and national decision-makers and relevant stakeholders. In addition, ÖMKi will organise an international roundtable for identified stakeholders and policymakers to discuss the objectives of the legislative framework for sustainable food systems, and related barriers and drivers for successful implementation. Furthermore, ÖMKi On-Farm Living Lab is involved in facilitating shared learning between living labs and mobilising citizens and young people to take part in innovation.

The project is supported by the European Union, GA 101086320.
